Budget Myth vs. Fact: Funding safety supplies

August 26, 2021

Black banner. Text: Budget myth vs. fact.

We are providing information about the implementation of our new agency budget structure through myth-busting and sharing facts that help us all learn together.

Myth #9: Safety materials and supplies, such as first aid kits, should be funded by salary and expenses because they are for the benefit of employees.

Fact #9: Materials and supplies for safety are general operation expenses. These costs should be funded from the appropriate program associated with the need for the supply.

For instance, general supplies such as first aid kits associated with a district office safety program would be funded with the Organizational Services and Support, or FSOS, budget line item. Safety supplies associated with a fire station would be funded with Wildland Fire Preparedness, or WFPR, funds. Likewise, program-specific safety supplies such as hard hats for a timber marking crew would be funded with the appropriate vegetation management budget line item associated with that crew’s work.
