Nature Conservancy, Forest Service partner to protect historic SC plantation

March 2, 2017

The Forest Service recently acquired the 900-acre western portion of the historic Tibwin Plantation, the latest acquisition in a 25-year land protection partnership with The Nature Conservancy.

The acquisition creates a new corridor from Francis Marion National Forest to the Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge. Two miles of the historic “King's Highway” also cross this tract. Formerly a Native American trail called “The Broad Path,” the colonial road from Boston to Charleston was built under the order of the King of England. The Francis Marion National Forest protects the longest remaining section of this original unpaved highway.
