Cherokee youth use online identification module to integrate culture and science
The “What's that Plant?” module developed in partnership with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians is now available online. The goal of the project was to integrate current science-based knowledge with the traditional knowledge passed down from generation to generation from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians.
The plant module was originally designed in 2015 to introduce Cherokee youth to the cultural and scientific significance of 14 plant species. The module includes interactive activities and features information on plant identification and plant use to help young people develop a heightened awareness of the natural world around them – including the challenges they face in protecting cultural and natural resources.
