Volunteers help remove barriers along pronghorn migration route
Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, in partnership with Arizona Game and Fish Department and about 30 volunteers with the Arizona Antelope Foundation, worked on a fence modification project in high elevation grasslands near Rudd Knoll on the Springerville Ranger District.
Pronghorn migrate from snow-covered higher elevation grasslands in the winter to forage at lower elevation grasslands and then migrate back to the higher cooler grasslands that usually offer better food resources in the summer. Barbed wire fences often act as barriers to these movements along the migration corridors, so volunteers worked to replace the bottom barbed wire of several fences with smooth wire to help eliminate movement barriers for this grassland species.
This project supports the agency’s strategic goal of sustaining our nation’s forests and grasslands by helping to create a more resilient ecosystem. We would like to thank our partners for their hard work on this project!
