Recognizing recent public access and safety improvements to the Anan Wildlife Observatory
WRANGELL, Alaska — Forest Service leadership from the Alaska Region were joined by representatives of the Wrangell Cooperative Association Tribal Government, the Wrangell Borough, and Wrangell Chamber of Commerce to recognize recent public access and safety improvements to the Anan Wildlife Observatory, Aug. 9, 2017. The Tongass National Forest recently completed phase one of the Anan Master Plan to improve access to the observatory, which includes: a new pathway from the beach to the trailhead, a wider viewing platform, a mooring float for floatplanes and boats in a more sheltered part of the bay, and a larger accessible vault toilet.
The Tongass has been working over the past several years to address the concerns brought forward by the public, and has done so with considerable assistance by partners in the community. The Stikine Jetboaters Association provided valuable input to help guide the process. WCA trail crews conducted annual trail maintenance and helped protect the amazing cultural resources at Anan. And the Borough of Wrangell worked closely with the Anan staff to provide first responder services for medical emergencies.
The Anan Wildlife Observatory is operated by a dedicated staff of five, serving 16 boat and fixed-wing outfitter guides who bring thousands of visitors to experience the beautiful sights and sounds of Anan.
Public access and safety improvements from Phase One of the Anan Wildlife Observatory Master Plan included a new pathway from the beach to the trailhead, a wider viewing platform, a mooring float for floatplanes and boats in a more sheltered part of the bay, and a larger accessible vault toilet:
