TITLE 2400 - TIMBER MANAGEMENT

2442.4 - Methods of Marking Timber

The following color codes will be the standard colors to be used on the Lolo Forest for timber sale marking.

1. Cut tree (CTM) - Orange

2. Leave tree (LTM) - Blue

3. Cutting unit lines - Blue

4. Property lines, mining claims, etc. - Red (refer to FSM 7150)

5. Reserve tree (RTM) - Any color not otherwise used on sale

6. Timber and boundary marking in visually sensitive foregrounds

signs only

Cutting unit lines shall be marked with three well defined vertical blue stripes. As a minimum, these stripes should be 2 feet long, and midpoint of the stripe should be at eye height. When property and unit lines are the same, there will be a red stripe on the property line and one blue stripe facing into the unit. In visually sensitive foreground areas, use boundary signs, along with a painted stump mark when within 100 feet of a road, trail, or other viewpoint. In some cases, other resource uses may justify a variation from this requirement and the rationale for these variations should be documented.

Colors may vary from the above if the sale has previously been marked or with the written approval of the Forest Supervisor.

Cutting units will be identified on the ground to facilitate review by prospective bidders and sale administration. As a minimum, cutting units will be identified whenever a proposed or existing road enters and/or leaves a unit. Units shall be identified by using cutting unit signs. When the road is the boundary for a unit, the area along the road need not be painted, but should be shown on the sale area map as the unit boundary. Signs should be outside of road clearing limits to avoid being destroyed during construction and after the road is built it may need to be resigned. It is recommended that unit numbers be posted intermittently along the boundary of cutting units.

TITLE 2400 - TIMBER MANAGEMENT

The marking within units (CTM - LTM) that are within 100 feet above or below a road, trail, or other viewpoint, should be adjusted so that the breast height mark is painted on the side opposite the viewpoint and a small spot on the lower side below stump height. In visually sensitive foregrounds the marking changes shall be mentioned in the timber sale report. All boundary signs in visually sensitive units should be removed after the unit has been harvested and accepted.

Where the property line has been marked and posted to standard, trees blazed on property boundary should be left or high-stumped, according direction in FSM 7150.

Reserve trees to be protected under C2.3 and C6.32 will be marked with a paint color other than used for other marking on the sale. This will provide positive identification for assessment of liquidated damages under C6.32. It is also recommended that units with reserve trees are to be identified on the Sale Area Map. The following entry would be made in the map legend:
