WASHINGTON, D.C.—Currently, more than 1.4 million active-duty military members serve on our frontlines, sacrificing day after day for our nation’s defense and freedom. Military service can be lonely and feel thankless. These heroes and their families experience long separations, celebrations spent apart, uncertain futures and frequent moves that strain and affect all who serve and those around them.

Military service is primarily made up of the young, with approximately 75% of post-9/11 veterans under the age of 45. Unfortunately, some service members return from deployment with mental, physical and emotional scars that can affect them and their families for the rest of their lives. Roughly 56% of veterans experience major barriers in returning to civilian life—ranging in difficulties around attaining education, inadequate financial resources and lack of physical or mental wellness. The unemployment rate for veterans was 6.5% in 2020 with approximately 200,000 service members expected to transition to civilian life over the next four years.

Military service should not prevent American families from thriving.
