WASHINGTON - Temperatures across the states have caused extreme heat and high humidity in some areas. Whether you're working or playing outside in the summer, anybody not accustomed to the heat is at risk for a heat-related illness. Your body is constantly struggling to disperse heat it produces and oftentimes you aren't even aware unless you become exposed to more heat than your body can handle.
According to the National Safety Council, in 2014, 244 people dies in the U.S. from exposure to excessive heat. Take steps to protect yourself:
- Wear appropriate clothing, including a wide brimmed hat
- Take frequent water breaks
- Apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 and never leave kids or pets unattended in a vehicle.
