Chief Tom Tidwell It is my pleasure to welcome Sonny Perdue as USDA’s 31st Secretary of Agriculture.

Secretary Perdue came by his knowledge of agriculture the old fashioned way: he was born into a farming family in Bonaire, Georgia. From childhood, and through his life in business and elected office, Secretary Perdue has experienced the industry from every possible perspective. He is uniquely qualified to serve as Secretary, having been a farmer, agribusinessman, veterinarian, member of the Air Force, state legislator and governor of Georgia.

In his initial remarks to USDA employees this week, Secretary Perdue stated, “The only legacy that I seek is the only one that any grandparent seeks — to be good stewards and to hand off our nation, our home, our fields, our forests and our farms to the next generation in better shape than we found it.” So true.

I look forward to working closely with Secretary Perdue and his team as we continue to improve lives and carry out the Forest Service mission of sustaining the nation’s forests and grasslands.
