Around the Forest Service: November 2023

December 1, 2023

WASHINGTON, DC—Working together makes a difference. In November, the agency celebrated partnerships of all kinds.

We're restoring longleaf pine forests: The Forest Service, partners and America’s Longleaf Pine Restoration Initiative are working together to restore these forests, which are hotspots for biodiversity and provide habitat to endangered species.

We're continuing to bring wildfire prevention education to the public: On Thanksgiving Day, Forest Service firefighters guided the massive Smokey Bear balloon along the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade route.

We're kicking off the holiday season: The 53rd People's Tree from the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia, was lit Nov. 28 on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. The 63-foot Norway spruce was named "wa'feem'tekwi," meaning "bright tree," by the Shawnee Tribe. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Noche Buena, Winter Solstice, Kwanzaa, Diwali or other holidays, we hope you will be able to spend time with your loved ones or in ways that are meaningful to you.
