National forests are AWEsome: National Forest Week 2024

July 8, 2024

Two people hiking in a forest. Text: Find your awesome. Get out, get dirty & give back on a national forest near you. National Forest Week, July 8-14.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—You work for the Forest Service, so you don’t need anyone to tell you the national forests and grasslands we steward are incredible. From the unbelievable biodiversity of the Appalachian Mountains in the east to the giant redwoods and sequoias in the west, our country’s natural resources are, indeed, awesome.

That’s why our partners at the National Forest Foundation help us celebrate these treasures. If you’re new or just need a stats refresher:

  • 193 million: Acres of National Forest System lands

  • 5,200: Miles of Wild and Scenic rivers flow through national forests

  • 150,000: Miles of hiking trails running through the National Forest System

  • 7 in 10: Americans live within 100 miles of a national forest.

We invite everyone to share National Forest Week messaging across social media channels and look forward to hearing your stories about your work and play on national forests and grasslands and how nature connects us.

While national forests are worthy of celebration all year, we are excited to see you shine a light on these special places during National Forest Week.

Ways to get involved:

  • Use the hashtags #NationalForestWeek and #FindYourAWEsome on social media.

  • Submit your photo and help promote the photo contest throughout your network.

Thank you for all that you do for our public lands today and their future.
