Webinar series: Managing productive oak ecosystems
The Northern and Southern research stations are hosting a webinar series on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in January 2026 to share the latest U.S. Forest Service research on oak management and silviculture. Please join the webinars to hear from Forest Service researchers who will discuss strategies for managing productive oak-dominated forests in the eastern U.S.
This training is aligned with our agency priorities; specifically, our efforts to create resilient forests through active forest management.
In the webinar series, Forest Service scientists and experts will discuss oak ecology, oaks in hardwood timber markets, management tools such as prescribed fire and mechanical treatments, and insects and diseases such as oak wilt and spongy moth.
The final session will focus on strategies for promoting oak regeneration, which is a management goal in many eastern forests that is difficult to achieve in today’s mesophytic landscapes. Harvesting, competition control and prescribed fire promote natural regeneration, while planting locally adapted seedlings can artificially promote oak regeneration.
Please register for each of the following webinars that you would like to attend:
Jan. 20, 10 a.m. ET: Fire Management and Silviculture in Oak Ecosystems
Jan. 22, 10 a.m. ET: Planning for Oak Regeneration at Scale
Each session will include strategies for sustaining our eastern oak-dominated forests. The series also highlights connections between markets and resilient forests across all landownerships of the eastern U.S.
The webinar is part of the Rooted in Research series and is presented by the Northern Research Station and the Southern Research Station.
