WASHINGTON, D.C.—You are cordially invited to virtually join Chief Randy Moore, members of Alaska’s congressional delegation, House Speaker Mike Johnson, and others for the lighting ceremony for the Capitol Christmas Tree, an 80-foot Sitka spruce from Alaska’s Tongass National Forest. The lighting ceremony will be held Dec. 3 at 5 p.m. Eastern on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol.
Please watch the ceremony live tomorrow at 5 p.m. Eastern on YouTube.
The Alaska Region is honored to have both of its forests, the Tongass and the Chugach national forests, take part in the 2024 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree project. This is only the second time in 54-year history of the Forest Service providing the "The People's Tree" that it comes from the great state of Alaska. Although the tree was harvested from the Tongass, the entire effort spanned the entire state, as both Tongass and Chugach staffs engaged with the people of Alaska to create 10,000 Christmas tree ornaments and more than 45 tree skirts that carry the holiday spirit from Alaska to the U.S. Capitol.
