2022 Recreation Fee Changes

On January 1, 2022 the Daniel Boone National Forest will implement Forest-wide recreation fee changes. These changes will impact fees at 32 sites across the Forest, including nine sites that do not currently require a fee.

50th Anniversary of Big Swag Helibase

The Daniel Boone National Forest Helitack Program marked its 60th anniversary in 2020. This program was the first Helitack Crew established east of the Mississippi River – a milestone for the Forest, Region 8, and the Forest Service Aviation Program. This year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary of our current Forest helibase on Big Swag Ridge. Big Swag Helibase is an all-in-one location that provides rapid response to fires, a base for Forest fuels reduction, and learning opportunities to Forests throughout the region.

Future of the Red: Management in the Red River Gorge

The Daniel Boone National Forest has begun a public planning process that will help shape the future of the Red River Gorge. The 42,000 acres of the Gorge have seen significant increases in visitation that have pushed areas of the Gorge to their limits. In order to balance these increases in visitor use with appropriate protection of Gorge resources, the Daniel Boone National Forest has begun a comprehensive planning process.
