Forest Products Permits

Deer mossMany individuals are interested in collecting a number of the natural products on the national forests. All collections require a permit from the District Ranger, who is responsible for setting the appropriate restrictions on both the quantity and the location of collections.

On the Forest only limited products are permitted to be harvested. The Forest Service collects fees for the issuing of permits to harvest these natural resources. To obtain a permit, individuals and helpers will be required to provide official identification.

The following special forest products require a permit for private or commercial harvesting:

  •     Christmas Trees                            Christmas trees will be available on-line via Recreation.gov at
    https://www.recreation.gov/tree-permits/ocala starting November 23.
  •     Deer Moss
  •     Turkey Oak tips
  •     Crooked wood or Dragon wood
  •     Palmetto fronds
  •     Dead and Down
  •     Lightered Wood
  •     Firewood

Examples of harvesting restrictions include:

  • Firewood may be harvested only in designated areas that have been evaluated for their relative abundance and impact on wildlife.
     
  • Crooked wood (lyonia ferruginea) and deer moss may only be harvested from areas scheduled for regeneration.
     

Forest Product permits are now available through the Lake George Ranger District (325-625-2520) or the Seminole Ranger District (352-669-3153) by appointment.

Firewood permits are $20/permit and you will be able to get about three (3) truck bed loads, which is approximately 1 ccf.

Maps of designated areas will be issued with the permit and are valid from October 1, 2020 - September 30, 2021.
