Advisory Committees

What is a Resource Advisory Committee?

The RAC is a 15-member advisory panel which provides advice and recommendations to the USFS on land use planning and management of the National System of Public Lands issues for millions of acres of Federal public lands.

The RAC meets one to four times per year for one to two days. Membership includes representing energy, tourism and commercial recreation interests; environmental, archeological or historic interests; and elected officials, and the public at large. Council members are selected for their ability to provide informed, objective advice on a broad array of public lands issues and their commitment to collaboration in seeking solutions to those issues.

Members are appointed to three-year terms and may be reappointed for one additional term. Council members must be residents of the state in which they apply for. Members serve without salary, but are reimbursed travel and per diem expenses.

Meetings are open to the public; however, transportation, meals and lodging are the responsibility of the participating public.

Intermountain Region RAC

The Intermountain Region makes recommendations on creating new or changing existing recreation fees managed by the Forest Service. The Forest Service and BLM signed an interagency agreement to enable both agencies to use existing BLM Resource Advisory Councils (RACs), where appropriate. More information can be found on the National Recreation RAC webpage.

Recommendations from the RACs are combined with other public notification and communication efforts to help the Forest Service make sound decisions regarding recreation fees.
