Utilize recycling services to collect, sort, transport, and report on waste diversion rates throughout the incident. Utilize food waste/compost wherever feasible to minimize landfilled waste from fire camp.
Reduce emissions with proven diesel alternatives; consider solar light towers, electric golf carts.
Promote the use of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for radios, particularly in combination with mobile solar recharging equipment.
Encourage the use of reusable water bottles to reduce single-use plastic
Assess feasibility of greening fire pilot opportunities and implement where practical and beneficial (e.g., mobile water treatment, hybrid solar-battery or solar-diesel generators, “net zero” camp in a box).
Support the USFS Greening Fire Research and Development team if they are assigned to your incident to assess energy needs for future alternatives
