Northeastern Area State and Private Forestry Strategic Plan Fiscal Years 2013–2018

The roughly 125 million residents who live in the Northeast and Midwest benefit from forests every day (U.S. Census Bureau 2011). This region (figure 1) is fortunate to have 172 million acres of forests that provide clean air and water, wildlife habitat, and places for recreation (Smith and others 2009). These trees and forests help protect drinking water supplies for 52 million consumers (Barnes and others 2009). Forests-based businesses across the Northeast and Midwest employ 431,000 workers and yield nearly $125 billion in annual shipments of forest products (U.S. Census Bureau 2012).
