The outdoor drama, "The Legend of Tommy Hodges," will be presented on Fri, Oct. 21 and Sat, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m., 7:45 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
During the outdoor performance, audiences travel to 1906 to hear about the legendary Tommy Hodges, a student of the Biltmore Forest School with a reputation for mischief who mysteriously disappeared.
This is the 20th year the Cradle has offered the play, with each year presenting a different twist. The show is 1 mile long - the audience walks 1 mile to see the entire play. Audience members should dress warmly, wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a flashlight.
Hot cider & cookies will be served after each show. Ponchos & other raingear are welcome if weather is showery, but please leave umbrellas at home. The US Forest Service will provide a program which summarizes last fall's fires on the Nantahala Ranger District. The presentation will cover the organization of suppression resources, cooperative efforts, suppression repair activities and future Forest Service restoration activities. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. The presentation will be held at the Tartan Hall, First Presbyterian Church, Franklin, NC at 6:30 p.m., Thursday April 6, 2017.
The Cradle of Forestry in America historic site will begin the 2017 season on April 8 with a living history event, "Old Time Plowing and Folkways."
David and Diane Burnette from Haywood County will demonstrate how their Percheron draft horses work the land the old way. Weather permitting, they will plow the Cradle's vegetable garden along the Biltmore Campus Trail and teach a skill that was once familiar to many.
The Cradle of Forestry's living history volunteers will demonstrate their crafts among the historic buildings, including wood working, candle making, chair caning, blacksmithing and crafting corn husk dolls.
The Cradle of Forestry invites the public to celebrate Migratory Bird Day on Saturday, April 29, with a guided bird walk, live raptor program, and family-oriented activities.

The Uwharrie Kids Fishing Day has been rescheduled for Saturday August 26th. This event will be held rain or shine at the Badin Lake Recreation Area and King's Mountain Point Day Use Area from 9AM to Noon. Kids from 2-16 years old are encouraged to participate, and a limited number of hot dog lunches will be available. Other activities include Skins n Skulls, BB Gun Target Shooting, Archaeology and Botany, and fire engines from the VFD and Forest Service.

Afternoon Tea with Llamas Saturday, Sept. 23, 11 am & 2 pm: Llamas carry your lunches or snacks on this easy 2 mile roundtrip walk at Cradle of Forestry. Ice tea and cups provided. The group will picnic along the trail.
The programs will be led by George Appenzeller and Sarah Meadows, founders of Challenge Adventures, a nonprofit organization experienced in leading hiking and camping adventure programs for youth groups since 1989. They have involved over 4,000 young people in educational experiences in the outdoors with llamas. Before each walk, they will explain traits that make llamas good pack animals, and also good trail companions. Visitors will hear about the llamas' cooperative social structure that presents humans with an example of teamwork and caring. As the group walks the Forest Discovery Trail, children can take turns leading llamas.

Fees: Admission to the Cradle of Forestry is $5.00 for adults. Youth 15 and younger are admitted free. Golden Age, America the Beautiful, and Every Kid in a Park passes are honored.
