Fire Update

Flathead National Forest

Fire Information Contact: (406)755-3910

Fire Size: 4,000 acres

Percent Contained: 0%

Cooperating Agencies: USFS, DNRC, Missoula County Sheriff, Condon Fire Department

Cause: Suspected Lightning

Current Fire Status: The Crazy Horse Fire made significant runs yesterday, with the majority of movement to the North and Slightly to the East. Due to the dry fuels and windy conditions, extreme fire behavior was observed throughout the day and late into last night. The small amount of precipitation received this morning did little to help suppression efforts, with increased activity expected to occur again later this afternoon.

Operational Plan for Tuesday August 12, 2003: Due to the extreme fire behavior, fire fighters are putting an emphasis on firefighter and public safety with the majority of work focusing on structure protection ahead of the fire front.

A direct attack on the East flank with dozers and engines is planned for today, with the hope of establishing an anchor point. A Unified Command Team made up of representatives from the U. S. Forest Service, Montana DNRC, Missoula County Sheriff's Office and the Condon Fire Department is currently directing fire operations.

Vail's Type-I Incident Management Team from Southern California has been ordered to take over the Crazy Horse Fire, which is currently burning on Forest Service and Plum Creek lands. The team is expected to arrive on Wednesday and take over the fire on Thursday.

Current Road and Trail Closures: Residents living in Kraft Creek and Guest Ranch Road are still under preliminary evacuation warning.

The current closures include: Elk Creek Trail #30, Elk Ridge Trail #301, Hemlock Feeder Trail #695, Glacier Creek Trail #690, Glacier Lake Feeder Trail #742, Turquoise Lake Trail #708, Glacier Slough Trail #481, Lindbergh Lake Roads 79 and 79c. Lindbergh Lake Campground, Kraft Creek Road #561
