Flathead National Forest Fire Information Contact: (406)755-3910 or (406)756-4620 Website: www.fs.fed.us/r5/fire/ciimt5/ac/ Current Status: Yesterday, fire activity was again suppressed by an inversion layer over the fire that created smoky conditions. Water-dropping helicopters were able to fly most of the daylight hours and were very effective tools. The most active burning took place in the northwest area of the fire in sections 28 and 29. Firefighters continued to strengthen and extend the fire line along Forest Road 9578 (between Kraft Creek Road and Lindbergh Lake Road). The crews also did structure protection in the areas immediately threatened by the fire. The fire size has reached 9,475 acres and containment is zero percent. No structures have been burned to date and there has been one injury reported to date. One person was taken to the hospital last night to be treated for dehydration. The cause of the Crazy Horse Fire is lightning. As of 5:00 p.m. yesterday, 451 personnel from the following have been assigned: Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Indian Affairs, U.S. Forest Service, Montana DNRC, Missoula County Sheriff, and Condon Fire Department. Resources assigned to the fire include: 15 crews, 26 engines, 18 dozers, 6 water tenders and 2 helicopters. Operational Plan for today: A Red Flag Warning was issued late in the afternoon yesterday regarding an incoming storm front. The front arrived last night and brought some rain, lightning and wind. The rain was welcomed by everyone, but was not enough to penetrate the forest canopy. Firefighting activities will continue to focus on structure and population protection as weather conditions dictate. Line construction continued into the night last night and the crews working today will be extending the existing line along the eastern edge. Evacuation notices remain in effect on Kraft Creek Road and Pine Ridge Road. Homeowners were allowed back into their properties for a short time yesterday morning in order to inspect and gather needed items. The sheriffs office will conduct the "home inspection" access again today. Advisory warnings have been issued to Holland Lake, Lindberg Lake and Guest Ranch Road. Current road closures: Kraft Creek Road, Pine Ridge Road, Elk Creek Trail #30, Elk Ridge Trail #301, Hemlock Feeder Trail #695, Glacier Creek Trail #690, Glacier Lake Feeder Trail #742, Turquoise Lake Trail #708, Glacier Slough Trail #481, Lindbergh Lake Roads 79 and 79c, Holland Lake Trailhead, Holland Lake Campground, Owl Packer Camp, and Lindbergh Lake Campground. Community Meeting Tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Swan Valley Elementary School |
