Projects

The Forest Service conducts an environmental analysis of proposed projects following guidance provided in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) . These analyses are documented in a variety of NEPA documents. This page includes links to some of the projects currently being analyzed, or recently completed by the Osceola National Forest.

The Forest Service depends on public involvement to make the process most effective, and your involvement is strongly encouraged. The Forest Service is proposing silviculutural and restoration treatments on approximately 3800 acres of forestland in the southwestern part of the Apalachicola National Forest.

Developing Proposal

Canoe and Kayak tours for children and general public at Juniper and Alexander Springs Rec Areas.

Workcenter Timber Stand Improvement Project

The primary purpose of this project is to reduce the fuel loading and restore forest health in areas that were damaged by Hurricane Michael by removing downed and damaged trees.

Briar Patch Analysis Area

The Forest Service proposed to conduct timber management and wildlife habitat improvement activities on 3,600 acres of the Apalachicola National Forest. The proposed action include 2,800 acres of thinnings and 800 acres of modified group selection.

City Of Tallahassee Solar Farm 2 Connector.

Connector into existing Right Of Way for City of Tallahassee transmission line. Three new utility poles will be placed with width of 106 feet.

Florida National Scenic Trail improvements on the Ocala National Forest (2018)

The Forest Service proposes improvements to an 11mi FNST segment on the western side of the forest in partnership with the Florida Trail Assoc. Specific work includes replacing and adding puncheons in wet areas and a short reroute around Hull Creek.

Holmes Easement for access to private inholding.

Issuance of Special Use permit for legal access to their property.

Liberty Analysis Area

The Forest Service proposes to conduct 4,800 acres of timber management treatments on the Apalachicola National Forest. Proposed activities include thinnings, clearcuts and modified group selection.

Maple Creek Ecosystem Restoration Project

We are developing a proposal to continue ongoing restoration activities in the Saint Marys Landscape Analysis Area. Proposed treatments will include timber thinning and converting some slash pine plantations to longleaf pine.

Osceola Forestwide Restoration Project

The Osceola NF proposes to evaluate and select pine stands across the forest for timber thinning and re-establishment of longleaf pine to reduce hazardous fire fuels, improve plant and wildlife habitat, and to establish healthy ecosystem processes.

Phase One RCW Core Analysis Area

The Forest Service proposes silvicultural and restoration treatments on approximately 2,000 acres within the Red Cockaded Woodpecker (RCW) Core Analysis Area.

Silver Lake Home Owners Association Easement

Easement for access to private land.

Silver Lake OHV Trailhead project

The Apalachicola National Forest proposes to reconstruct the parking area in the Silver Lake Recreational Area. Actions include repaving and expanding existing OHV parking, installing signage and fencing, and enclosing a work shed.

Southern Region Cave and Underground Abandoned Mine Closure

Short-term (up to 2 years) closure order for all caves and abandoned mines in the Southern Region (2 exceptions)to minimize transmission potential of the fungus that continues to cause white nose syndrome in bats that has affected populations.

Big Gully Analysis Area

The proposed action would include treatments such as first thinning of young pine plantations, intermediate thinning of mature slash and longleaf stands, and herbicide application for timber stand improvement.

Brickyard Analysis Area

The Forest Service is proposing to treat approximately 3312 acres of forest land on the Apalachicola National Forest.

Columbia County Communications Tower

Columbia County has requested a Special Use Permit for the construction, maintenance and year-round use of a 250-foot public safety communications tower to improve fire and law enforcement communications in the Sandlin Bay Area.

Forest Service Road 313 Bridge Replacement

The Apalachicola National Forest, Wakulla Ranger District, intends to prepare a Decision Memo (DM) for the replacement of a road bridge on forest service road 313. The bridge is located in compartments 316 and 317 of the Wakulla Ranger District, Waku

Hurricane Michael Fuels Reduction and Restoration Project

The Apalachicola National Forest looks to implement fuels reduction and restoration work across 19,000 acres of forestland. Activities will include: salvage of timber, mechanical fuel reduction, and planting of longleaf pine trees.

Improve upon the land-based management capabilities of the Silver Glen Recreational Area.

Forest Plan Amendment to Accelerate Ecological Restoration (Amendment 12)

This project proposes amendments to the National Forests in Florida Revised Land and Resource Mangement Plan to accelerate ecological restoration activites through revision of vegetation management standards.

Ocala NF Dispersed Camping and Campfire Analysis

Analysis of the Resource and Social impacts of modifying the current dispersed camping and campfire use policies

Paisley Woods Trails Restructure

Restructure recreational trail use by eliminating, combining, or relocating motorized and non-motorized trails. Current situation: unmanagable user behavior and conflicts, safety concerns, and overlapping and incompatible trail systems.
