Resource Policy and Management

CIRMOUNT is responsive to the needs and challenges of western society imposed by climate changes on mountain ecosystems. Two of CIRMOUNT's goals relate to resource policy and management:

• Communicate science among diverse disciplines and provide sound support for effective land-use planning management (communication decision-support);
• Promote development of longterm, policy-relevant mountain climate and ecosystem databases (research, observation, communication, and decision- support)

CIRMOUNT coordinates activities to inform, demonstrate, and encourage the inclusion of climate-change science in land-use planning and policy, and in conservation and resource-management efforts.

Current and Recent Activities--Workshops for Resource Managers:

• A workshop for resource managers was held in conjunction with the MTNCLIM 2014 Conference in Midway, Utah, and was held September 18, 2014. The workshop was co-organized by USFS PNW Research Station, USFS Region 4, USGS Southwest Climate Science Center, and USFS Rocky Mountain Research Station.

• Workshop, Bridging Boundaries: Climate Adaptation for Resource Managers, was held on October 4, 2012 at the YMCA in Estes Park, CO and was co-organized by the US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station and scientists at Colorado State University and the University of Arizona. The workshop was held in conjunction with the MTNCLIM 2012 Conference.
• Workshop, Adapting to Climate Change on the Willamette National Forest: Hydrological Resources, Aquatic Systems, and Roads. Held June 10, 2010 on the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, Blue River. The workshop was held in conjunction with the MTNCLIM 2010 Conference.

• As part of the Westwide Climate Initiative - Toolkit Project, PSW scientists spearheaded a workshop for managers, Evaluating Climate Change in the Eastern Sierra Nevada: Adaptation Options for Planning & Project Implementation held September 22-23, 2009 in Bishop. CA.
• Workshop, Managing Devils Postpile National Monument (DEPO) in an Era of Changing Climate; A Workshop to Explore Future Climate Variability, Impacts, and Adaptation Options held 8 October 2008 in Yosemite National Park.
• PEP (Portable Electronic Presentation) of the talk that David L. Peterson and Kathy O'Halloran gave at the USFS Station Leadership Team meeting October 2007. Adapting to Climate Change in the Olympic National Forest
• Workshop, Resource Options for Forest Management in the Context of Climate Change was led by L. Joyce, C. Millar, R. Neilson, D Peterson, and J. Townsley. It was held on September 22, 2006 in Mt Hood , OR following the MTNCLIM 2006 conference. Background information and presentations from this workshop:

• Workshop, Climate Variability and Change: An Overview of Our Current Understanding with Implications for Park and Natural Areas Management was led by S. Gray, L.J. Graumlich, and T. Oliff. • Conference, Bringing Climate into Natural Resource Management, was held June 28-30, 2005, in Portland, OR. This conference, sponsored by the USFS Global Change Research Program, Western Forestry & Conservation Association, and the USFS Rocky Mtn Research Station, presented recent climate science information pertinent to resource management in climate change issues.
