  • Montana BDR Alternative Route

Montana Backcountry Discovery Route Riders: Due to recent rain events on the Beaverhead Deerlodge National Forest, a small section of the Montana BDR has become nearly impassable.  The Forest has received multiple reports of riders getting stuck, and we even received word of an injury occurring. The section of the route we are referring to is the southern ~8 miles of National Forest System Road #290 (aka Gravelly Range Road.) The attached map shows the section of the Montana BDR (in Red) and a suggested alternative route (in Blue.) Please consider utilizing this alternative route if you encounter wet road conditions.

July 6, 2026 map showing the original Backcountry Discovery Route (BDR) - the Gravelly Range Road 290 - in red, that is impassible and dangerous when wet. An alternative route following North Valley Road (county), the Ruby Divide Road (Forest Road 100), and Eureka Basin Road (Forest Road 347) is shown in blue.
