Opportunities Still Available to Join the Youth Forest Monitoring Program
(Helena, MT, April 8, 2026) — The Montana Discovery Foundation and the Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forest still have nine slots available for the 2026 Youth Forest Monitoring Program. High School students (entering grades 9-12) who love the outdoors, or are curious about outdoor-based jobs, are encouraged to apply.
“Families tell us they value the mentorship their students receive from Forest Service scientists,” said Conservation Educator Liz Burke. “It helps teens explore natural resource careers while developing teamwork and problem-solving skills.”
This year’s program runs Mondays-Thursdays from June 22-July 30 and includes a multi-day overnight in the Scapegoat Wilderness. Participants train with Forest Service scientists to learn forest ecology and field monitoring protocols for streams, soils, vegetation, and wildlife. Students work in teams to collect and interpret data, guided by field instructors and Forest Service project sponsors. At the end of the season, teams present their findings to the community and Forest Service managers.
Applications for the program are due April 17, 2026. Visit the Youth Forest Monitoring Program website to learn more about the program and how to apply.
