The genetics program at the Coeur d’Alene Nursery services three regions for conifer genetic testing of multiple species; grafting scion for seed orchard and clone bank establishment; pollen extraction, storage and formulation for supplemental pollination of seed orchards; cone and seed processing for gene conservation; and aeciospore processing and storage for blister rust screening of Western white pine and Whitebark pine.
Rust resistant elite trees identified during the screening process are grafted into seed orchards for production of improved seed, and into the breeding orchard to achieve advanced generations of genetic improvement in rust resistance through breeding, further screening and selection.
