Burton Ridge Trail #9

The original purpose for the Burton Ridge Trail #9 was to access the fire lookout on Burton Peak. The lookout is no longer staffed, but its associated cabin remains though it is in rough shape (not usable). The trail here has some great hunting areas, though hunters need to be cognizant that this peak borders the Myrtle Creek Game Preserve as well as scenic areas of various habitats. Don’t expect to find much water along this route so make sure to bring some with you. This is a good multi-use trail appropriate for both the hiker and horse.

The tread on the Burton Ridge Trail #9 is very visible with good markings and the grade incline is generally no more than 15%. The lower end of the trail is in a timbered area, but at about the 1.7-mile mark, the trail breaks out onto the ridgetop which is open and rocky. This continues all the way to the lookout location (elevation 6,844 feet). From up here on the peak there are panoramic views of the Kootenai River Valley as well as the Cabinet and Purcell ranges. From behind Burton Peak, the slightly higher Cascade Ridge extends to the west, into the heart of the Selkirk Crest.

General Information
