Cone collecting and tree planting are important management tools used by the Black Hills National Forest. Please join Forest staff for an educational walk to learn about different types of cone collection and reforestation methods. Presenters will discuss and demonstrate some of the tools and techniques used by the Forest to collect cones from native ponderosa pine trees.

NOTE: The Moon Walk starts at the Reuter Trailhead before heading up the Reuter Springs Trail. From Sundance, Wyoming, take US Highway 14 approximately two miles to Warren Peak Road. Turn right and drive approximately three miles; the Reuter Trailhead will be on the left.

What is a Moon Walk?

A Moon Walk is a special guided hike where you can explore the natural and cultural history of the Black Hills. These family-friendly events let you discover the forest and learn about the stories behind its beautiful scenery.

Key Details:

  • Always Free: There are no charges to attend a Moon Walk.
  • When: Held on Saturday nights, typically on the Saturday closest to the full moon, from June through September.
  • Duration: Each event starts at 7 p.m. and lasts for about two hours.

How to Prepare:

  • Dress in layers for comfort, as evenings can get cool.
  • Wear appropriate footwear like sturdy, closed-toe shoes (no sandals or open-toed shoes).
  • Bring a light jacket for the cool night air.
  • Allow plenty of travel time to and from the trailheads.
  • Important: Some routes may be challenging for those with mobility concerns or are not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers.

If a Walk is Canceled:

Moon Walks may be canceled unexpectedly due to lightning, high fire danger, or severe weather. Rain alone won't cancel an event unless lightning is spotted. Always check the Black Hills National Forest Facebook page or this page for cancellation notices before heading out.
