Northern Hills Ranger District to Conduct Prescribed Burn

Favorable weather conditions in place for hazardous fuels reduction work

Spearfish, SD., April 15, 2025— The Northern Hills Ranger District is planning to burn approximately 125 acres at the Beartown prescribed fire on Wednesday, April 16, if conditions allow. The Beartown project is located approximately 7 miles southwest of Spearfish. 

No closures are planned for this prescribed fire. Watch for warning signs along Tinton Road (Forest Service Road 134) during and after the prescribed fire. 

Residents may experience smoke during the prescribed burn. Go to https://fire.airnow.gov/ to find more detailed information about air quality. When driving, slow down and turn on your headlights when you encounter smoke on the road.

Weather conditions will be evaluated in the hours before the burn begins. If conditions warrant, this schedule prescribed fire activity may be canceled.

Stay informed about scheduled prescribed fires through the forest website www.fs.usda.gov/blackhills and social media channels. County emergency management officials will be notified when burning begins. 

Prescribed fire helps reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildfires.
