For the safety of firefighters and the public, the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison National Forests’ Ouray Ranger District has expanded the existing closure area in the vicinity of the Gold Mountain Fire.

PROHIBITIONS
Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50 (a) and (b), the following is prohibited on the National Forest System (NFS) lands and roads in the Ouray Ranger District, Uncompahgre National Forest, described below and shown on the attached map, incorporated into this Order as Exhibit A (the “Described Area”):
- Going into or being upon the Described Area. 36 C.F.R. § 261.53(e)
- Being on the Described Road. 36 CFR § 261.54(e)
EXEMPTIONS
Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:
- Entities that have Contractors that have a contract or other agreement with the Forest Service for work in the Described Area and those contractors’ employees and subcontractors,
- Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order or a written determination by a Forest Service authorized officer that a permit is not required under 36 C.F.R. § 251.50(e)(1) or (2).
- Any Federal, State, or Local Officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting force in the performance of an official duty.
DESCRIBED AREA AND ROAD
The described area is located in Ouray County southeast of Ridgway, CO, east of Highway 550 and Ouray, CO, south of highway 50, and west of Lake City, CO. Within NFS lands, the closure order’s western boundary begins at the NFS boundary directly south and east of Ridgway, Colorado, and east of Highway 550. The western boundary, beginning with the intersection of NFS lands with NFSR 871 (Dexter Creek Road), continues southwest coincident with, and includes, NFST 215 (Horse Thief Trail), which is coincident with the Uncompahgre Wilderness boundary. The southern closure boundary continues at the NFS-BLM boundary within the Uncompahgre Wilderness. The southeast boundary then follows the Wilderness boundary, before continuing east/northeast to intersect trails NFST 267 and NFST 259 (RIDGESTOCK SHORT CUT) -- along the ridgeline south of Little Cimarron River, north of the Wilderness boundary, and to the west and north sides of Uncompahgre Peak. The boundary then continues north/northeast to intersect the ridgeline east of Little Cimmaron River. The eastern boundary continues north to the Wilderness boundary, before jogging directly east until the intersection of the ridgeline west of Big Blue Creek. The NFS closure boundary then continues north along the ridgeline, and then west along the entirety of the northern NFS boundary again to intersect the Dexter Creek Road - completing the full area.

PURPOSE
The purpose of this Order is to protect public safety during the management of the Gold Mountain Wildfire.
IMPLEMENTATION
- This Order shall be in effect from July 2, 2026 at 1300 through October 1st, 2026 at 1200, unless rescinded.
- A map identifying the Described Area is attached and made part of this Order as Exhibit A. - Unless otherwise expressly defined in this Order, the terms used in this Order are defined by the regulations of the Secretary of Agriculture, 36 C.F.R. Chapter II, Parts 200-299. If there are terms in this Order that are not expressly defined in the Order or 36 C.F.R. Chapter II, Parts 200-299, their meaning shall be determined by their plain language definitions.
A violation of the above prohibitions is punishable as a Class B misdemeanor by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, or by imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. 16 U.S.C. § 551; 18 U.S.C.
§§ 3559, 3571, and 3581.
