Buffalo Peaks Wilderness - East side

Buffalo Peaks Wilderness offers a great variety of recreational opportunities. There are many miles of trail in or near the wilderness area, and all wilderness regulations apply. Trails in the wilderness area are for foot traffic only and not open to motorized vehicles or bicycles.

The east side of Buffalo Peaks Wilderness is located in Pike National Forest, and the west side is located in San Isabel National Forest.

General Information

Although the wilderness is open to foot traffic year-round, be aware that Forest Service Roads 432, 431, 433, 435 and 436 are seasonally closed for elk calving from January 1 through June 15. Also, the county does not plow the Weston Pass road past Sheep Creek Trail, so accessibility depends on snow levels.

No permit is required to access Buffalo Peaks Wilderness. However, please sign in at the trailhead when entering and sign out upon your departure.

No fee; however, campground fees do apply when staying at nearby developed sites.
