Burro Bridge Campground

Two miles northeast of Dunton, Burro Bridge is one of three campgrounds along the West Dolores Road (Forest Rd. 535). The campground has 14 sites with a few shade trees on a sloping hillside above the West Dolores River. 

The campground provides easy access to the Lizard Head Wilderness, but not easy access to the water. 

Services include vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire grates. No trash service is available.

This campground provides limited services from late September through October. Between October and May there are no services (water, trash pick up or restrooms). Please keep the campground clean and pack out any trash!

All sites are first come, first serve. 

General Information

Mid-May through September. For specific open / closure dates, visit recreation.gov.

 

Check-in time: 2:00 pm

Check-out time: 12:00 pm  

If the site is empty, campers may come in anytime.

Quiet time is typically between 10pm - 6am. Please be a good neighbor and limit use of generators to no more than one hour at a time.

Dogs must be leashed or otherwise physically restrained. Do not leave pets unattended.

Directions

From Dolores: Head north on Highway 145 about 13 miles. Turn left onto West Dolores Road (Forest Road 535). Burro Bridge Campground lies two miles northeast of Dunton.

The West Dolores Road follows the West Dolores River almost to its headwaters in the Lizard Head Wilderness. After 32 miles, the West Dolores Road rejoins Highway 145, six miles north of Rico. The road has a gravel surface, but the last 6 miles are steep, narrow, and not recommended for trailers.

Parking

Equipment with wheels (RVs, campers, cars) must fit in the parking spur.  There is not any overflow parking available.

West Dolores Road: Many side roads lead into the backcountry, open to OHV, horses, hikers, mountain bikers.

Hiking Info

Calico Trail: is comprised of two sections: Upper or North Calico (208) and Lower or South Calico (211).  The southernly portion is referred to as the Lower Calico trail (211) of the trail is accessed via the Priest Gulch Trailhead and is 12 miles long.  The northerly portion is referred to as the Upper Calico trail (208) and is 6.7 miles long.  This portion is part of the National Recreation Trail (NRT) system. 

Lizard Head Wilderness: Burro Bridge is a good basecamp for hikes or horseback rides into the Wilderness area.

Navajo Lake Trail: Located within the Lizard Head Wilderness, Navajo Lake trail (635) crosses open meadows, spruce-fir forests, and a series of very steep switchbacks before reaching Navajo Lake. Navajo Lake is small high elevation lake sitting at 11,154 ft. The trail continues past the lake and climbs in elevation until it reaches timberline and the Silver Peak/Navajo Basin Crest.
