Off Highway Vehicles (OHV)
There are many incredible roads and trails designated for Off-Highway Vehicles (OHVs) for exploration in the San Juan National Forest. Please review out OHV Motorized Vehicle Rules and Regulations before you head out on your adventure.
Know Before You Go
- Permits: Colorado Parks and Wildlife manages all OHV registrations and permits for both in-state and out-of-state OHVs. To purchase permits and register online, visit Colorado Parks and Wildlife OHV Registrations and Permits
- Know where you can ride: Check out the Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) online or pick them up at Forest Offices. These maps show you where to ride a given type of motorized vehicle, seasonal or wildlife closures, and more.

- Tread Lightly: Join the San Juan NF and Tread Lightly!® by following policies, regs and guidelines to minimize impact and allow for future use of the outdoors by leaving it better than you found it.
- Stay the Trail: Tips and Etiquette
- Act Responsibly: Respect the environment and the rights of others
OHV Road Riding
San Juan National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) differentiate between roads open to highway-legal vehicles only and roads open to ALL vehicles. Plan ahead and know where you can take your OHV.
OHV Trail Riding
San Juan National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs) identify which trails are open to wheeled vehicles 50 inches or less in width and which trails are open to motorcycles / e-bikes only.
OHV Camping
In addition to the several San Juan National Forest’s developed campgrounds situated near OHV roads and trails, dispersed camping is also allowed in many of these areas, as shown on the San Juan National Forest Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUMs).
If you plan to disperse camp, please review Dispersed Camping Regulations before your trip.
