Scenic Drives

Whether you are interested in paved highways or backcountry roads, you can find a route through the San Juan National Forest that provides spectacular mountain views.

The Scenic & Historic Byways Guide is funded by the History Colorado State Historical Fund and offers a multitude of resources for your next scenic drive!

San Juan Skyway: This 232-mile loop is a National Scenic Byway and one of the most scenic drives in America. It is open year-round (except when passes are closed temporarily by snow) and all travel is on paved highway. The San Juan Skyway allows visitors to travel through several communities linked by the Byway including Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride, Dolores, and Cortez.

Alpine Loop: The Alpine Loop Backcountry Byway is a network of four-wheel drive roads, open seasonally that connect Lake City, Ouray, and Silverton. It traverses passes up to 12,800 feet while showcasing old mines, ghost towns, natural wonders, beautiful wildflowers, and abundant wildlife. Visit www.alpineloop.info for more information.
