Agua Piedra Campground and Group Shelters

A relaxing, shaded campground nestled in a spruce-fir and aspen stands with great access for fishing and hiking.

General Information

The campground includes:

  • 40 single sites, each with a picnic table and fire ring
  • Two double sites, each with two tables and a fire ring.
  • Two group shelters located west of the campground.

Restricted to Trailers under 36'.

Overnight Use:
Single Site: $24 per night (includes parking for one vehicle)
Additional Vehicle Fee: $12 per vehicle per night
Group Shelter A (Up to 50 people): $125 per night
Group Shelter B (Up to 100 People): $150 per night
Day Use:
$12 per vehicle per day

From Las Vegas, New Mexico, take State Highway 518 approximately 51 miles to the Agua Piera Campground. 

From Penasco, New Mexico, travel east on State Route 75 about five miles, to an intersection. Turn right, onto State Route 518 (unmarked) and continue about seven miles to campground entrance.

From Taos, head south on NM-68. Turn Left onto NM-518 and stay on it for 23 miles. Agua Piedra Campground will be on your right.

Recreation Opportunities

Day Hikes Info

The Cordova Canyon (#17) and Agua Piedra (#19A) trails begin from the campground. The Indian Lake Trail (#19C) is found about one quarter-mile down the Agua Piedra Trail.

Horseback Riding Info

The Cordova Canyon (#17) and Agua Piedra (#19A) trails begin from the campground. The Indian Lake Trail (#19C) is found about one quarter-mile down the Agua Piedra Trail.

Horse trailer parking is available at the Agua Piedra Trailhead:

  • Turn left when entering the campground toward the campsites.
  • The trailhead is before the campsite loops.
  • Day use parking is $12.

The Cordova Canyon Trailhead is found out of the group camping area, where no horse trailer parking is available. From the Agua Piedra Trailhead parking area, ride back toward the campground entrance and turn left for the group campground road. The trailhead is at the end of the road.

Camping: There are no campsites that allow horses or horse facilities within the campground.

Reserve the group shelters for group picnicking.

Each campsite comes with a picnic table.
