FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., June 9, 2025 — Firefighters completed roughly 4,000 acres of ignitions today on the Basin Fire, a lightning-caused wildfire located 20 miles northwest of Flagstaff, that is being actively managed to improve forest health.
A closure order for the area surrounding the Basin Fire has been issued for public and firefighter safety.
Fire crews spent Monday conducting firing operations along Fort Valley Road (U.S. Route 180). Firefighters treated approximately 4,000 acres of forest land due to favorable weather conditions that allowed for the effective and safe use of fire along the highway’s edge.
The effects of today’s firing operations on the landscape align with current incidents objectives, which promote a healthy, resilient ecosystem. Land treatments —such as low-intensity, intentional fire – help reduce community risk to future catastrophic wildfire while providing for forest health.
The Basin Fire started June 5 and firing operations are planned to continue tomorrow.
Smoke will remain highly visible from Flagstaff and the surrounding areas during firing operations, and moderate-to-heavy smoke impact is anticipated on Fort Valley Road (U.S. Route 180). Motorists are asked to slow down and remain cognizant of firefighters working in the area, and to abide by all posted signage. Motorists should also anticipate delays when traveling in the area.
Updates regarding the Basin Fire will be shared on InciWeb at inciweb.wildfire.gov/azcof-basin-fire.
