Firewood Permits
Firewood permits for the Pecos-Las Vegas Ranger District are available beginning April 15, 2026.
The Santa Fe National Forest will begin permit sales May 1, 2026, for the Cuba, Jemez, Coyote and Española Ranger Districts.
Permits can be purchased online or in-person at a District Office or the Supervisor's Office in Santa Fe, N.M.
E-permits
The Santa Fe National Forest now offers e-permits!
A printed physical permit must be in the permittee's possession and kept readily available while harvesting and transporting products.
- This permit is nontransferable.
- A copy of the permit on a mobile device is not acceptable.
- Multiple reproductions of this permit are not allowed.
If you would like to designate a second individual, contact your local office. This option may not be available for all special forest products and at all locations.
Permit Costs
- Dead and down wood: $20 for 10 cords
- Green juniper from Rowe Mesa: $10 per cord (2 cord minimum)
- Permits may be purchased online or in person with cash, check, or credit card, or by phone with check or credit card. Office hours are listed on the Santa Fe National Forest website, but visitors should call ahead because hours may change.
Rules and Regulations
Dead-and-down permits are valid across the forest, except in wilderness and other restricted areas. Review the firewood permit maps before going out to the forest.
Permit holders will receive load tags, a cutting map and harvesting guidelines. Loads must be tagged securely, and visitors should bring equipment suitable for harvesting and transporting wood. Forest Service staff may be in cutting areas to check permits and answer questions.
Before traveling, visitors should check with their local ranger district or the New Mexico Department of Transportation for current road and weather conditions. Travel is allowed only on roads designated on Motor Vehicle Use Maps, which are available digitally or as free paper copies at all ranger district offices and the Supervisor’s Office.

Other Permits
Christmas Tree Permits
The Santa Fe National Forest sells Christmas Tree permits from November through December. This permit allows you to cut a Christmas Tree within designated areas of the Santa Fe National Forest!

Wilding permits, which authorize collecting live plants and trees from National Forest lands for personal use, are available by contacting the Santa Fe National Forest.
