McCrea Bridge Campground
McCrea Bridge Campground is nestled on the backwaters of Island Park Reservoir, about 29 miles southwest of West Yellowstone, Montana, in stunning Island Park, Idaho. Situated within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest’s Ashton/Island Park Ranger District, this campground rests at an elevation of 6,200 feet, accessible via U.S. Highway 20 south from West Yellowstone for 27 miles, then west at Elk Creek Service Station for two miles.
Natural Features: A mixed forest of lodgepole pine cloaks the campground, casting partial shade over its sites, while summer wildflowers burst across broad meadows in this volcanic caldera landscape. The reservoir’s edge laps nearby, its waters reflecting the vast Idaho sky and teeming with kokanee salmon, rainbow trout, and cutthroat trout.
Island Park Reservoir beckons with boating, waterskiing, and canoeing, a concrete boat ramp and docks right at hand—though irrigation drawdowns shrink access by August. The Henrys Fork, a fly-fishing legend, flows five miles north at Big Springs, launching the three-hour National Recreation Water Trail float, while trails for hiking, biking, and ATVs weave through the forest beyond.
Facilities: The campground offers 19 single-family sites and four double-family sites, each equipped with picnic tables, campfire rings, and grills; some require stairs from parking to pads. Vault toilets, drinking water, and trash collection are available, with a host on-site and firewood for purchase. Access roads are paved, interior loops and spurs gravel, accommodating RVs up to 65 feet.
