Scenic Drives

The forest’s scenic byways dazzles with mountain vistas, while the grassland’s backroads offer sweeping views of Idaho’s high desert.

Scenic Driving

Scenic drives on the Caribou-Targhee National Forest and Curlew National Grassland are a laid-back way to take in jaw-dropping views from your ride! With winding roads through mountains and open plains, it’s a feast for the eyes. Here’s what you need to know to hit the road:

Where You Can Drive

Routes are ready—grab a map at ranger offices or online to plan your cruise. In the Caribou-Targhee, the Wyoming Centennial Scenic Byway (Highway 26/287) stretches 163 miles from Dubois to Pinedale, slicing through the forest with stunning mountain vistas and river valleys. The Teton Scenic Byway (Highway 33) rolls past Teton peaks and forest edges—pure eye candy. Over on the Curlew Grassland, quieter gravel roads—like those off Holbrook-Stone Road—wind through sagebrush plains, offering big-sky views and a taste of Idaho’s wild side. Stick to public roads; some close seasonally, so check ahead.

What’s Special

The forest throws down drama—think jagged peaks, shimmering reservoirs, and elk grazing by the road, with summer’s green or fall’s golden glow popping off. The Curlew switches gears—wide, rolling grassland under endless skies, dotted with sage and the odd hawk soaring. It’s two vibes: forested highways with postcard-worthy turns, grassland backroads with a raw, open feel—both scream “roll the windows down.”

Tips to Be Prepared

Pack snacks, water, and a camera—stops are sparse, and you’ll want pics. In the Caribou-Targhee, watch for wildlife (deer don’t check mirrors!) and bring layers—mountain air shifts fast. The Curlew’s sun can blaze, so sunglasses and a hat help. A map or Avenza app keeps you on track—cell service fades—and gas up first; stations are few. Check road conditions—gravel gets rough, and snow can close high passes.

Scenic drives here are all about the journey and the views—fuel up, pick a road, and let the Caribou-Targhee and Curlew show off their best!
