Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV)
Off-highway vehicle (OHV) riding is a favorite recreation activity on the Fishlake National Forest with approximately 2,700 miles of trails and road available for motorized use, including the Paiute ATV, Gooseberry, Parker Mountain Trail Systems and portions of the Great Western Trail.
Be sure to bring along a copy of the forest OHV Travel Map during your visit. These maps assist riders in identifying legal riding areas and also provide important details regarding safety and regulations while operating these vehicles on the forest. These maps are available free of charge at any of our district offices, Supervisors office or on this website by visiting our Visitor Maps and Guides page.
Utah Specifics: The State of Utah does not have reciprocity ATV/OHV licensing agreements with other states. Non-resident OHV permits can be purchased from the Utah Department of Natural Resources website.
Beginning Jan. 1, 2023, Utah will require all OHV operators to complete the free Utah Adult Off-Highway Vehicle Education Course. Operators 18 years of age or older may operate an OHV if they possess an approved adult OHV education certificate. The once-in-a-lifetime course is expected to take less than 30 minutes to complete.
Operators under the age of 18 shall possess a youth OHV education certificate in order to operate an OHV on public land, road or trail. To help ensure the safety of all riders, Utah law allows anyone under 18 years of age can operate an OHV on public land if they are:
- Able to reach and operate each control necessary to safely operate the off-highway vehicle and
- Have in their possession an OHV education certificate, and
- Under direct adult supervision
The online Youth Education Course requires a fee but only needs to be passed once. Once you pass, you can print out an operator license that will be valid immediately.
The OHV certification covers all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), off-highway motorcycles (OHMs), and side-by-side ATVs (type II ATVs or UTVs).
RIDE ON Designated Routes is a new statewide campaign that has united land management agencies to educate outdoor recreationists who use motorized vehicles on Utah’s public lands.
Through RIDE ON Designated Roads, Trails and Areas, Tread Lightly! along with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and many local State agencies, offers education and stewardship focusing on anything with an engine that gets you into the outdoors. Check out all the resources available, including maps, events, volunteer opportunities and tips to keep you safe, and keep access open and available to RIDE ON. So, get out and RIDE ON with us responsibly!
