Outdoor Science and Learning

The Forest Service provides a variety of educational resources and programs for individuals of all ages to learn about the environment and our nation’s forests and grasslands.

Cultural Sites/Exhibits

The Forest Service has a long history of preservation and discovery through management of cultural resources across 193 million acres of national forests. These remains of human history include ancient Indian villages and rock art, travel routes and markers, military forts, and abandoned mines and mills. Together, they are part of the nation’s historic and cultural atlas.

National Heritage Program
The Heritage Program protects and shares significant cultural resources on public lands, ensuring that future generations can understand the human stories present on the landscapes of our national forests and grasslands. In addition to managing them for public use, enjoyment and education, the Forest Service protects cultural resources from vandalism, theft, fire, and other threats.

  • The program aims to incorporate our shared history as a part of our recreational experiences and community life.
  • In partnership with other land managing agencies, local communities, stakeholders, and Tribes, the program contributes to economic and cultural sustainability in a manner sensitive to traditional cultures and local/regional priorities.

Interpretive Areas/Exhibits

Silver King Mine Interpretive Site

Silver King is a historic Gold Mine that was claimed by Brigham "Brig" Daniel Darger of Spanish Fork, Utah in 1894. It was a working gold mine throughout the 1890's and it was his place of residence with his wife Pansy Permelia Brown and their ten children. Throughout this interpretive area there is a trail with 8 interpretive information posts.

Bullion Canyon ~ Canyon of Gold Auto Tour

Cross the veil of time and discover the secrets of a canyon riddled with gold and the saga of men who sought her riches. From as early as 1865, flecks of gold in the creek and veins of gold inside the walls of Bullion Canyon have drawn the hopeful by the thousands. The mouth of Utah's "Canyon of Gold" driving tour stretches 2.5 miles from the trailhead. The tour takes an hour or two to complete and will introduce you to the life and times of the miners of Bullion Canyon.

Visitor Centers

WildCat Information Center & Rest Area

Wildcat is managed by the Fremont River Ranger District and is operational seasonally with the help of our wonderful volunteers. Although the shelves of the Wildcat Information Center are currently filled with maps, books, and pamphlets, the building was originally built as a ranger station in the late 1930's. The Forest Service later converted this quaint little white house into a visitor center, which operates seasonally from June to September (weather permitting). For travelers journeying between the small Utah towns of Torrey and Boulder, the Wildcat Rest Area and Information Center serves as a convenient stop along UT-12. Visitors can take a moment to stop at the rest area to stretch their legs, explore the retail offerings, or utilize the restroom facilities before continuing their journey. While cell phone reception can be unreliable on Boulder Mountain, an emergency radio service to Loa is accessible at Wildcat during its operational months.

Twin Creeks Visitor Center & Twin Creeks Amphitheater

The Twin Creeks Visitor Center and Twin Creeks Amphitheater are managed by the Fremont River Ranger District and staffed by amazing volunteers during the operational months of June through August. The amphitheater is great for summer interpretive and conservation education programs. Twin Creeks Information and Visitor Center is open to all and offers a variety of recreational information and opportunities, merchandise, maps and reading material. Use of the amphitheater is free and may be reserved through the Fremont River Ranger District (435) 836-2800. This is a great location to enjoy educational talks or host outdoor programs!
