Snow Plowing Requirements for National Forest System Roads
The Salmon-Challis National Forest is working with landowners who have the need to plow snow on National Forest System Roads under Forest Service jurisdiction. For a private party (an individual, group of individuals, road user association, etc.) to legally plow National Forest System Roads, a permit is required.
The purpose of the permit is to outline the expectations and limitations involved in snow plowing and removal on National Forest System Roads. Permits may be issued for one to ten years, depending on the submitted application.
If you want to plow snow on a National Forest System Road this winter or may be wanting to soon, please contact Steffan Wilcox, Civil Engineer for the Salmon-Challis National Forest at 406-596-2382 or steffan.wilcox@usda.gov to start the permitting process.
