PROHIBITIONS
Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50 the following act is prohibited on the National Forest System on campgrounds, roads, and trails within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, Sawtooth National Forest, described below and shown on the attached map incorporated into this Order as Exhibit A.
- Going into or being in the Described Area. 36 CFR § 261.52(e).
- Being on the Described Road. 36 CFR § 261.54(e).
- Being on the Described Trails. 36 CFR § 261.55(a).
EXEMPTIONS
Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:
- Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order or a written determination by a Forest Service authorized officer that a permit is not required under 36 C.F.R. § 251.50(e)(1) or (2).
- Federal or State administrative personnel in the performance of an official duty.
- Any Federal, State, or Local Officer, or member of an organized rescue or firefighting resource in the performance of an official duty
DESCRIBED AREA/ROADS/TRAILS
Grandjean Closure Area includes all National Forest System lands within portions of Township 10 North, Range 11 East; Township 10 North, Range 12 East; and Township 9 North, Range 11 East, Boise Meridian, as shown on Exhibit A.
Beginning at the intersection of Forest Service Road (FSR) 524 and Section Lines 43 and 34 located in 10 North, Range 11 East; continuing north along the Section Line of 43 and 34 to the intersection of Section Lines 42,27,43 and 34 located in 10 North, Range 11 East; continuing east along the section lines to the intersection of Section Lines 26,25,35, and 35 located in 10 North, Range 11 East; continuing north along the section line of 26 and 25 to the intersection of 23,24,26, and 25 10 North, Range 11 East; continuing east along the section line to the intersection of 24,46,25 located in 10 North, Range 11 East; continuing north along the section line of 25 and 46 to the watershed divide, also known as Wapiti Creek South Fork Payette River, located in 10 North, Range 11 East; continuing southeast along the watershed divide to the intersection with the section line located in Sections19, 50, and 51; continuing south along the section line to the watershed divide, also known as the South Fork of the Payette River, located in Sections 31, 71, and 32 located in 10 North, Range 11 East; continuing southwest along the watershed divide to the intersection of section line 3 and 2, 10 North, Range 11 East; continuing north along the section line to the intersection with FSR 70824 located in Sections 34 and 35 located in 10 North, Range 11 East; continuing northwest along FSR 70824 to it’s terminal located in Sections 43 and 34, 10 North, Range 11 East.
All lands, roads, and trails contained within this perimeter are included in the closure.
Exclusions
The following areas are specifically excluded from the closure:
• Sawtooth Lodge
• Sacajawea Hot Springs
PURPOSE
The purpose of this Order is to protect public safety and manage natural resources from the flash floods, slides, and debris flows following the Wapiti Fire of 2024.
IMPLEMENTATION
- This Order shall be in effect from 7/28/2026 at 12:01 pm through 12/31/2026 at 11:59 PM, unless rescinded.

- Unless otherwise expressly defined in this Order, the terms used in this Order are defined by the regulations of the Secretary of Agriculture, 36 C.F.R. Chapter II, Parts 200-299. If there are terms in this Order that are not expressly defined in the Order or 36 C.F.R. Chapter II, Parts 200-299, their meaning shall be determined by their plain language definitions.
- A violation of the above prohibitions is punishable as a Class B misdemeanor by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, or by imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. 16 U.S.C. § 551; 18 U.S.C. §§ 3559, 3571, and 3581.
