Hanna Mill Closure

Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(a), and to provide for public safety, the following acts are prohibited within the Inyo National Forest. This Order is effective from August 7, 2026, through August 7, 2028. 

1. Camping within the Hanna Mill Closure Area. The boundary of the Hanna Mill Closure Area begins at the informational sign (38.002742° Lat., 119.247918° Long.) on Lake Canyon Trail, then continues east 767 feet at a bearing of 110 degrees to a cairn at the outlet to Crystal Lake (38.002040° Lat., 119.245411° Long.), then continues south along the eastern shoreline of Crystal Lake to a cairn on the south shore of the lake (37.999072° Lat., 119.245773° Long.), then continues southwest 300 feet at a bearing of 229 degrees to another cairn (37.998550° Lat., 119.246584° Lat.), then continues west for 905 feet at a bearing of 291 degrees to a cairn on the large waste rock pile (37.99940°Lat., 119.249537° Long.), then continues north-northeast along Lake Canyon Trail back to the starting point at the informational sign, as shown on Exhibit A. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(e).
2. Entering or being in Crystal Lake, as shown on Exhibit A. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(k).

Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order: 

1. Any Federal, State or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.
2. Persons with a Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or
   Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order.

These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions in 36 C.F.R. Part 261, Subpart A.  A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than six months, or both. 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 18 U.S.C. §§ 3559, 3571, and 3581.
