M21 Road closure
There is a temporary partial closure of National Forest Road M21 between Hammerhorn Campground and Smokehouse Creek/ M21 crossing on the Covelo Ranger District within the Mendocino National Forest for public safety. This section of road has suffered a washout and is impassable. The road will be closed until repairs can be completed. Hammerhorn Campground is still accessible via the M1.

Forest Order
Pursuant to 16 U.S.C § 551 and 36 C.F.R § 261.50(b), and to provide for public safety and protect natural resources, the following act is prohibited within the Covelo Ranger District of the Mendocino National Forest. This Order is effective from 12:00 a.m. on June 18, 2026, through December 31, 2026.
Using a motor vehicle on National Forest System Road M-21 between Hammerhorn Campground and the Smokehouse Creek/ M-21 crossing as shown on the map attached as Exhibit A. 36 C.F.R. § 261.54(a).
Pursuant to 36 C.F.R § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:
- Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire fighting force in the performance of an official duty.
- Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order.
This prohibition is in addition to the general prohibitions found in 36 C.F.R Part 261, Subpart A.
A violation of this prohibition is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual, or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both.
