  • Plumas National Forest Camping Stay and Occupancy Limits

    A Forest Closure Order with the limits for amount of time and number of people allowed when camping on the Plumas National Forest.  

    The maximum time is 14 days in a developed campground, 14 days dispersed camping per Ranger District per year, not exceeding 30 days camping per year on the Plumas National Forest.

    Individual developed and dispersed campsites are limited to 8 people and 2 vehicles.

 PLUMAS NATIONAL FOREST

CAMPING RESTRICTIONS

 

Pursuant to 16 U.S.C. § 551 and 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(a), to protect natural resources, the following acts are prohibited within the Plumas National Forest. This Order is effective from June 24, 2025, through April 30, 2027.

  1. Camping for a period longer than 14 days within a calendar year in any developed campground per Ranger District.  36 C.F.R. § 261.58(a).
     
  2. Camping for a period longer than 14 days within a calendar year in any dispersed campsite per Ranger District.  36 C.F.R. § 261.58(a).
     
  3. Camping for a period longer than 30 days total within a calendar year. 36 C.F.R. § 261.58(a).
     
  4. Using a campsite in any single developed campground or dispersed campsite by more than eight (8) persons and/or two (2) vehicles.  36 C.F.R. § 261.58(f) and (i).

Pursuant to 36 C.F.R. § 261.50(e), the following persons are exempt from this Order:

  1. Any Federal, State, or local officer, or member of an organized rescue or fire-fighting force in the performance of an official duty.
     
  2. Persons with Forest Service Permit No. FS-7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order.

These prohibitions are in addition to the general prohibitions contained in 36 C.F.R. Part 261, Subpart A.

A violation of these prohibitions is punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both.  16 U.S.C § 551 and 18 U.S.C. §§ 3559, 3571, and 3581.
