Horse Riding and Camping
Horse Riding and Camping opportunities are available throughout the Sequoia National Forest on the Hume Lake Ranger District, the Kern River Ranger District, and the Western Divide Ranger District.
Horseback Riding
There are a number of trails that are open for horseback riding.

Horse Camping
Hume Lake:
Horse Camp Campground
- Located 13 miles SE of Grant Grove via Generals Highway to Big Meadow Road (Road 14S11). Five (5) units, horse corrals and vaulted toilet. Campsite elevation is 7,600 feet. This Campground is operated in cooperation with Sequoia National Forest and Back Country Horsemen of California - San Joaquin Sierra Unit. There is NO WATER at Horse Camp. Bring your own water.
Kern River Ranger District:
Blackrock Trailhead
- The Blackrock Trailhead is a beautiful and easily accessible gateway into the Golden Trout Wilderness. This trailhead is used for camping, hiking, and staging for backpacking trips in the wilderness. Horse corrals are available for any stock being utilized in the area.
Evans Flat Campground
- 6100-foot elevation. 20 campsites with fenced pastures and corrals for horses. A network of roads and trails covers the area. Access from Rancheria Road in the Greenhorn Mountains. Fenced pasture, 4 equestrian sites, no drinking water, Maximum RV length 20 feet.
Western Divide Ranger District:
- Located near the Shake Camp Trailhead (Long Canyon)
Forks of the Kern Trailhead
- The Forks of the Kern Trailhead is on road 20S67 off the Lloyd Meadow Road (22S82). The trail follows the Kern River, crosses the Little Kern River (no bridge, and extreme caution should be used), and continues on to the Cannell Meadow District of the Sequoia National Forest.
- Located near the Lewis Camp Trailhead
Jerkey Trailhead
- The Jerkey Trailhead is located at the end of the Lloyd Meadow Road (22S82). The trail intersects the Lewis Camp Trail and the Clicks Creek Trail on its way to Grey Meadow. The trail offers scenic views, meadows, and open forest area.
Lewis Creek Trailhead
- The trailhead is 8 miles North of Quaking Aspen. It is located off of Forest Service Road 33E01. The trail travels east to Trout Meadow, then north to Kern Ranger Station in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks. Offers scenic views of Sierra, crosses the Little Kern River on a suspension bridge, then to Trout Meadow Ranger Station, Willow Meadow, and north to the Big Kern River, up to the Little and Big Kern Lakes. Trail continues on to the Kern Ranger Station Bridge, crossing the Big Kern into the Inyo National Forest at the east end of the trail.
Shake Camp Trailhead (Long Canyon)
- Shake Camp (Long Canyon) Trailhead is a beautiful and easily accessible gateway into the Golden Trout Wilderness. This trailhead is used for camping, hiking, and staging for backpacking trips in the wilderness. Horse corrals are available for any stock being utilized in the area.
