Mt. Baker Highway (SR 542)
Starting at the forest’s northern boundary, travel along the Mt. Baker Scenic Highway (State Route 542), a designated Scenic Byway recognized by both Washington State and the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Maintained by the Washington Department of Transportation, this route provides primary access to the northern portion of the Mt. Baker Ranger District, including several national forest roads, recreation sites, and trails leading into the Mt. Baker Wilderness and the North Cascades National Park backcountry.
SR 542 begins at the Interstate 5 interchange in Bellingham, Washington, then heads east along the North Fork Nooksack River. The highway climbs to 5,140 feet and ends at Artist Point, renowned for its sweeping views of Mt. Baker and Mt. Shuksan. The Heather Meadows Recreation Area, near the end of the byway, offers additional scenic vistas.
Two concession-operated campgrounds—Douglas Fir Campground and Silver Fir Campground—are located along the highway. Visitors are encouraged to stop at the Glacier Public Service Center near milepost 34 for up‑to‑date forest road and trail information.
SEASONAL INFORMATION
Late Spring–Summer: Mt. Baker’s 10,781‑foot snow‑capped peak dominates the skyline, and clear days provide excellent views of Mt. Shuksan and the surrounding Cascade Range. Heather and huckleberry meadows brighten the landscape near the eastern end of the byway. Ancient lava flows that resisted glacial carving rise as dark andesite columns. Enjoy picnicking, short hikes, and the Heather Meadows Visitor Center, which offers historical insights into the area’s heritage.
Fall: Cooler temperatures and vivid fall colors arrive as snow levels drop, limiting high‑country hiking. Some side roads are groomed for winter recreation such as snowmobiling and cross‑country skiing.
Winter–Early Spring: Access to Artist Point by vehicle is only available seasonally. In winter months snowfall covers the area, and the Mt. Baker Ski Area operates at Heather Meadows at the end of the byway.
Check the Washington Department of Transportation (WDOT) website for current conditions.
