  • Temporary Public Use Fire Restrictions

    Due to hot and dry conditions, public use fire restrictions will be implemented in Mt. Hood National Forest beginning Thursday, July 17, 2025.

    "Pursuant to 16 USC § 551 and 36 CFR 261.50 (a) and (b), the following special restrictions and prohibitions are established on all areas, roads, and trails within the Mt. Hood National Forest, within the State of Oregon, and as depicted on the attached exhibits, hereby incorporated in this Order as Exhibit A. This Order becomes effective on July 17, 2025, at 12:01 am (0001) and will remain in effect through November 23, 2025, or until rescinded."

Forest Order

Pursuant to 16 USC § 551 and 36 CFR 261.50 (a) and (b), the following special restrictions and prohibitions are established on all areas, roads, and trails within the Mount Hood National Forest, within the State of Oregon, and as depicted on the attached exhibits, hereby incorporated in this Order as Exhibit A. This Order becomes effective on July 17, 2025, at 12:01 am (0001) and will remain in effect through November 23, 2025, or until rescinded.

PROHIBITIONS

  1. Building, maintaining, attending, or using a fire, campfire, or stove fire, including a charcoal fire and pellet fire on all areas, roads, and trails throughout Mount Hood National Forest. 36 CFR § 261.52(a).
  2. Smoking, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a designated campground, or while stopped in an area at least three feet in diameter that is barren or cleared of all flammable material. 36 CFR § 261.52(d).
  3. Using an explosive. 36 CFR § 261.52(b).
  4. Welding, or operating acetylene or other torch with open flame. 36 CFR § 261.52(h).
  5. Possessing or using a motor vehicle off National Forest System Roads, EXCEPT when operating in compliance with travel management rule and the Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM). 36 CFR § 261.13, 36 CFR §261.56.

EXEMPTIONS
Pursuant to 36 CFR § 261.50(e)(6), the following are exempt from this order:

  1. Persons with a Forest Service Permit No. FS7700-48 (Permit for Use of Roads, Trails, or Areas Restricted by Regulation or Order), specifically exempting them from this Order.
  2. Any Federal, State or Local Officer or member of an organized firefighting force in the performance of an official duty.
  3. Petroleum-fueled stoves, lanterns, or heating devices that have an on/off switch, provided that such devices meet the fire underwriter's specifications for safety as indicated by an Underwriters Laboratory (UL) or other similar certification.

PURPOSE

  1. To enhance area-wide fire prevention and safety objectives by restricting high-risk activities.
  2. To lessen the occurrence and threat of human-caused fires during high to extreme fire danger.

Violations of these prohibitions are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or imprisonment for not more than 6 months, or both (16 U.S.C. § 551, and 18 U.S.C. §§ 3551, 3571 and 3581).
