- Don't rely solely on GPS or map apps as these might not be updated with current conditions or closures.
- Please avoid driving in muddy conditions. Driving on Forest Roads before they dry out can cause significant and lasting damage. If ruts are forming from your tires, consider postponing your trip until things dry out.
- Be aware that log hauling operations frequently take place on Forest Roads. There will usually be signs about truck traffic and/or log hauling, but please stay alert at all times.
- Pull over to give adequate passing room to oncoming vehicles. Watch out for steep drop-offs or loose surface on the shoulder. If no safe shoulder is available at your location, stop and wait for other vehicles to pull over and/or back up. Do not expect logging trucks, cars with trailers, or other large vehicles to make room for you.
Many Forest Roads on Mt. Hood close seasonally.
Driving on closed roads is illegal and you can be cited by law enforcement. It is your responsibility to know before you go:
- Some closures are in place for wildlife. Seasonal closures provide rangeland for deer and elk. Winter is an especially stressful time for these animals. Help us protect wildlife populations by obeying closure orders, gate closures, and other signage.
- Some high-elevation roads close to motor vehicles in winter due to snow. Open/close dates may be dependent on snow levels. Forest Service roads are not plowed. Roads can become very treacherous with elevation gains during winter; GPS apps won't reflect this.
- While seasonal roads are closed to motor vehicles, most are still open for winter recreation activities including cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Some are also open to snowmobiling.
The Mt. Hood Snowmobile Club and Columbia Gorge Powersledders maintain a groomed system of snowmobile routes in partnership with the Mt. Hood National Forest. These clubs also maintain our warming shelters. Please respect the groomed trail systems that the clubs work so hard to maintain.
Mt. Hood National Forest Roads Table
Forest staff do their best to keep this table updated, but it may not reflect conditions on the ground. Closures due to snowfall or other natural events like landslides or flooding can occur at any time.
Contact your local district office and monitor weather, and remember: Forest Roads are not maintained for winter travel.
